Europe

Canal and river cruising is considered by many to be the best way to experience the true
spirit of rural Europe. Traveling historic rural waterways by barge allows you to see sites
you would otherwist never see and to savor the flavor of European country culture with none of
the usual hassles. Barge traveling has become enormously popular in recent years because it
provides travelers with excellent accommodations, an array of distinctive experiences and
excursions, cuisine and wines from the traveled regions and friendly crews.

There are several dozen vessels throughout Europe that are categorized as barges. France hosts
most of the European barges, but Italy, Germany, England, Ireland, Scotland and the
Netherlands also offer barging.
Barges come wide beamed or narrow and in three sizes:
- Small (6-10 passengers)
- Medium (12-24 passengers)
- Large (40-50 passengers)

Typically the length of a barge cruise is 5-6 nights, depending on what you choose.
And barges have different levels of amenities, so be sure to ask.
Charter barges are
those that are privately hired, and include captain, cook and crew.

The large barges are referred to as Hotel Barges. Besides offering beautiful cabins with
private bathrooms, they generally have a dining area, bar, library, sundeck and sometimes hot
tubs. Fresh and delicious meals are prepared onboard.

Self-drive barges are usually mid-size. They include comfortable living areas, private
cabins, showers (yes, with hot and cold running water), toilets, a fully equipped galley for
cooking and a sundeck for enjoying the scenery. A license is not required to operate the
boats and they are easy to handle, even if you don't have previous boating experience.
And with self-drive barges, you can stop when and where you wish. |
Accessible Travel
A number of the European barges are handicap accessible. These can be either "self steer" or
crewed with qualified and experienced skipper and crew. Hire can be for day trips, short
breaks or holidays. A few boats provide sleeping accommodation for up to 12 passengers.

Theme cruises are also popular during certain times of the year and are centered around themes

Remember, barge reservations fill fast and companies often offer specials. Ask about both
when you call.
