Our Crew
Don
Skipper and all around boat guy, has been "messing about in boats" since he was a
boy on Penn Cove on Whidbey Island. His first sailboat was a sprit sail 5 footer made from a
single sheet of plywood. A wooden version of the classic lateen rigged sailfish toted on a
rickshaw type trailer kept him on the water every day he could be there. He and Kathy have
been sailing Shawmanee for nine years, he as a 100 ton Master for eight.
Kathy
Kathy also grew up on Whidbey Island, but more of a farm/horse girl. She's too quick to
point out that she is not a boat person...except when it comes to Shawmanee. She is a
capable first mate and deck hand and no one can work that galley as well as Kathy. Healthy
food, presentation and attention to detail is the girs's forte. No one is a stranger and
you never feel anything but family in her presence.
Shawmanee always sails with a captain and crew of two. The deckhand might well be Jake, Don
and Kathy's son. When he is aboard, the deckhand could be Don instead because Jake is a
relief skipper and holds his 200 ton Skippers license and has maritime experience including 3
years as first mate on tall ships, freighter and tug experience and small boat adventures with
Outward Bound as a group leader.
In the picture above with Kathy and Don are Jim and Carol Hitz (couple to the left). Jim, a
retired dentist, is the original builder of Shawmanee.
